Japanese Magnolias for Your Mobile Alabama Garden
Marvelous small accent trees, the spring blooming Japanese magnolias, Magnolia kobus, will draw your eye with a colorful display of pink, white, purple or red flowers that appear before the leaves flush.
Also known as saucer or tulip magnolias, these trees develop a large flower bud that opens to a bloom that resembles a tulip – hence the name.
Blooming, or flowering magnolias are generally 15′ to 25′ in height, 15′ to 20′ in width, and deciduous. They require full to part sun and prefer moist but well drained soil.
Magnolia x Ann, Betty, and Jane (the miniature Girl series) all have reddish purple blooms with white to cream interiors – Ann blooms early, Betty and Jane mid spring.
Magnolia stellata Royal Star and Water Lily are star magnolias. Their blooms are white with a fluttering or winglike appearance.
Magnolia x loebneri Leonard Messel is a pale pink and white flowering magnolia with a larger growth habit – up to 30′ tall.
Relatively low-maintenance landscape trees, any of the above would make a stunning addition to your spring garden. We will have many varieties of Japanese magnolias available at the MBG Fall Plant Sale October 24th-26th!
