These annuals and perennials are grown by our own wonderful Greenhouse Ladies:
|
| Columnea sp. |
Lipstick Plant |
In a hanging basket; treat like fuchsia. The color on this one is a psychedelic red |
Coreopsis auriculata
‘Autauga Gold’ |
Autauga Gold Tickseed |
A favorite in the perennial garden, this one never stops blooming! |
| Costus malortianus |
Yellow Stepladder Ginger |
This ginger has large, fuzzy leaves that are unique in the shade garden. It will produce small, lemon-yellow flowers nested in the center of the foliage. Give it rich soil and filtered light, and it will be very rewarding. |
| Cyperus albostriatus ‘variegatus’ |
Dwarf Striped Umbrella Plant |
This one has so much white in it, it will really pop out in the dry shade to light-shade garden. Hard to find and evergreen for us. |
| Hemerocallis ‘Stella de Oro’ |
Stella de Oro Daylily |
These little charmers bloom their hearts out right into Fall. They are in full flower right now. |
| Justicia brandageana |
Shrimp Plant |
One of the top ten plants to attract hummingbirds. Give it filtered light and ordinary soil and it will bloom all Summer and Fall. |
| Monarda didyma ‘Jacob Cline’ |
Jacob Cline Beebalm |
Stop-red flowers on this 3-foot plant for full sun or light shade will bring hummingbirds flocking to the garden from May through July. |
| Pentas lanceolata |
Red Egyptian Star / Star Flower |
Another magnet for hummingbirds and butterflies and blooms best in full sun although it will perform in light shade. Try it with one of the purple salvias. Glorious! |
| Plectranthus saccatus |
Large-leaf Spur Flower |
They are in full flower and wonderful for the shade garden. |
| Saxifraga stolonifera |
Strawberry Geranium |
Beautifully veined leaves, evergreen, solid with dainty, white blooms in late Winter / early Spring, this groundcover is a staple for the moist, shade garden. |
| THESE TWO CLERODENDRUMS ARE STUNNERS IN ANY GARDEN: |
| C. indicum |
Turk’s Turban / Tubeflower |
Guaranteed to delight, the Turk’s Turban will grow up to 8 9 feet tall, and in late Summer will produce 2 3 foot inflorescences with numerous creamy-white 4-inch flowers that hang downward on the stem and then produce metallic-blue fruits surrounded by strong-red calyxes. A vigorous plant! |
| C. speciosissimum |
Pagoda Flower |
Showy “look-at-me” red-orange flowers rise high above the foliage on this hummingbird favorite. At MBG it is planted adjacent to the Herb Garden and always elicits comments from visitors when in flower in the Summer and into Fall. |
| Philadelphus coronarius |
English Dogwood |
This is a very showy deciduous shrub, rapid-growing to 6’, best in moist, well-drained soil, full sun to light shade. Once established it is drought-resistant and wind-tolerant and will burst forth in Spring with stunning white flowers that completely cover it. It is a favorite companion plant with azaleas. |
| TWO OUTSTANDING VINES: |
| Lonicera sempervirens ‘Sulphurea’ |
Yellow Trumpet Honeysuckle |
Hummingbird-friendly, like its coral-colored cousin, this form is not quite as vigorous and it appreciates some afternoon shade and compost-rich soil. Grows to about 5 feet. |
| Maurandya antirrhiniflora |
Snapdragon Vine |
Such a mouthful for a beautiful, workaholic plant! Velvety-soft, light-green foliage with lipstick-magenta flowers throughout the growing season, well into Fall. It looks like the first cold weather would shut it down, but this vine is tough as nails, growing to 5 feet. It loves our current dry conditions and a full sun exposure. |
